/WHAT THIS IS

Objects in Dinner is a Lao and Thai dinner series rooted in home, memory, and the quiet rituals of gathering. It's about the tools we use, the textures, the tastes we remember, and the people we share them with.

/HOW IT STARTED

I wanted to cook my mom's recipes for my friends, one real coursed dinner, done properly. Getting there took longer than the cooking did. There was a lot of asking before a restaurant said yes, and a lot of learning about the parts of feeding people that happen long before anyone sits down. That first night was only ever meant to be one night. Then people asked when the next one was. So I did another, and I've been cooking ever since.

/HOW I THINK ABOUT IT

Most of what people know as Thai food started in Laos. Papaya salad, laab, sticky rice. They crossed a border and picked up a different name on the way to becoming familiar here. Knowing where food comes from matters. Food is political, all of it is, and if the whole point is to tell a story then the story should be accurate.

/WHO'S COOKING

I'm Jenny Phetxayrat, an illustrator and designer who started cooking. The dinners came out of the same instinct as the drawing, paying attention to things most people walk past and arranging them until they mean something. Design isn't decoration on top of these nights. The menu, the flyer, the bowl, and the room are all part of the same piece of work. Objects in Dinner started with Quentin, who left for fine dining. I run it alone now, though rarely by myself.
